Exploring Wasatch Mountain State Park and Big Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway

Sunshine here, taking the wheel on this leg of our Salt Lake City adventure! We were itching to trade cityscapes for mountain vistas, so Wasatch Mountain State Park became our home base. Nestled just east of downtown, this campground served up stunning views and the perfect jumping-off point for exploration.

Our first adventure was a casual hike on the Wasatch State Park Nature Trail, a scenic 2.5 mile loop trail that we easily accessed from our campground. It meandered through wildflower-filled meadows. Pro tip: keep your eyes peeled for adorable marmots sunning themselves on the rocks!

But for the thrill-seekers out there, the WOW (Wasatch Over the Wasatch) trail is an absolute must-do. This was the moment my brand new Yeti SB140 got its first taste of dirt, and let me tell you, it was glorious! The climb up from Mahogany Campground was challenging, but the panoramic views and exhilarating downhill absolutely made it worth it. Speaking of Mahogany Campground, our campsite (#79) was a dream come true. Tucked right next to Pine Creek, the sound of the rushing water lulled us to sleep and energized us for our adventures.

Refreshed and rejuvenated by nature, we decided to cruise back to the city via the Big Cottonwood Canyon Scenic Byway. This stunning drive offered breathtaking vistas, a plethora of trailheads, and even a couple of ski resorts! We couldn’t resist pausing at Brighton Ski Area to conquer the Lake Mary Trail. And for a dose of city proximity, we also tackled the Mount Olympus trail, offering epic views with a convenient Salt Lake City location.

From peaceful hikes to heart-pumping mountain biking, Wasatch Mountain State Park and the surrounding areas truly had it all. Stay tuned for more adventures as we explore the hidden gems of Salt Lake City!
